Berliner Valve Bass Flugel  in Bb c.1870

This  Bass Flugel (or bell-forward Baritone) employs Berliner valves  or "Berlinner Pumpen".   These short piston valves were used from the mid 1800s until the Perinet valves became the standard in the late 1800s.  Note that the valve crooks all enter the valve casing at the same level.  This flugel is held horizontally when being played.  There is no maker's name on this well made horn - but it is probably made in the Markneukirchen area of Germany.  It plays with a full rounded tone in a high-pitch Bb.
