Foote Eb Alto with Berliner Valves c.1863

This is a Eb Alto Horn made by John Howard Foote in New York about 1863 - just before he formed partnership with J.F.Stratton as "Stratton & Foote".  This horn utilizes "Berliner Pumpen" or Berlin valves which featured short valve sections with all tubing attached at same level (see valve detail photo below).  The alto came in its original black wooden "coffin" box typical of the period.  Despite its age, this alto still plays sweetly and in tune. It now is being played in a civil war re-enactment band "The Bayou City Brass" in Friendswood, Texas
