"Pocket" Cornet in C - Side Action String Rotaries c.1865

This cornet is made of nickle silver and employs side action string operated rotary valves.   The Cornet is held horizontally  when played - with the valve levers on top.   As there is no makers name inscribed on the bell or garland, it may  have been imported from France or Germany during the US  Civil War.  A cornet from this period in the Key of C (high pitch) is somewhat unusual- as most band instruments were in high pitch Bb or Eb.  A cornet in C however could be effectively used in the parlor  to play along with a piano sheet music. This cornet employs an unique vernier tuning on the leadpipe. Note round hole for lyre- typical of instruments of this period.  This  cornet plays beautifully.
