Doblophone in
Bb c. 1890
This is a duplex instrument -
essentially a double bell Euphonium - but with both bells on the same
side. The name on the horn is Emil Wulschner
Indianapolis - who apparently was a
dealer and importer and "Sole Agent in US for Boosey" about c.1890....
Arnold Myers
has indicated that "Doblophone" was a Besson trade name for this style
horn
- with both bells on the same side. He indicated that their better
models had the dividing valve before the playing valves. Apparently
Wulschner was only briefly the Boosey agent around 1890. Earlier, the
Boosey agent was Pond, and later, Boosey established their own US
business. In any regard, Besson copy or not, this horn
certainly
demonstrates the superior fabrication methods and style of an
early Besson instrument . It seems to have a gold wash over
raw brass. It plays easily with an authoritative
tone. Scroll down to see the valve set detail.
