Boosey & Hawkes Marching French Horn  c.1954

This horn is marked: "Imperial... made by Boosey & Hawkes Ltd., London... made in England".  The serial number is 186274 indicating horn was made in 1954. What is interesting is that bell-forward marching French horns ("Frumpets") were not commonly seen before the late 1960s and 1970s - in school marching bands in the US. The horn is 27" long and the bell is 12 1/2" in diameter and currently plays in key of Eb. It is assumed that different crooks were available so that horn could also play in F.  The receiver takes an alto horn mouthpiece.  This design was tried by several US makers, but it proved unwieldy with so much bell weight that far from the player.
