Distin Altophone in Eb  c.1889

This horn - with the distinctive raised leadpipe was marketed as an Altophone by Henry Distin.  The horn has crooks for Eb, high Eb (not quite F), and what seems to be C.  The logo itself is the mystery (see Below).   It has the makers location curiously scratched off and "New York" engraved over. Distin apparently moved to NY in 1877- and was there until 1882.  However, the Patent date of 1884 would date the horn after 1884.  The serial number 6105 would seem to have him making the horn in Philadelphia about 1889.   The serial number is curiously off-centre. Langwill indicates there was some violent controversies in 1883 between Conn and Distin's principals.  The other area scratched off is above his name- where his logo was usually located.  Otherwise, this is a sweetly playing horn.
