Italian Bass Cornetto  c.1500  (Reproduction)

This is a reasonably representative reproduction of an Italian Bass Cornetto c.1500.   It belongs in the family of Serpents- leather covered wood instruments with an expanding  conical hole leading from a metal bocal to the bell end. It is a lip-vibrated aerophone using a form of cup mouthpiece..  Finger holes are spaced along the length to facilitate playing different notes. The serpentine shape is necessary for the musician's hands to reach some of the finger holes

This particular instrument was made by Scott Hall, an energetic fellow in Florida, who loves to experiment making strange musical instruments. In this one, he uses hollowed out layers of marine plywood glued together and covered with vinyl tape instead of leather.  A few falset notes can be achieved, but a chromatic scale is not possible on this horn.
