Wurlitzer TARV
Trombone
c.1860
This valve trombone was
made by Franz Rudolph Wurlitzer in approximately 1860-1865. Wurlitzer
was born Saxony on 1831 and flourished as a
brass instrument maker in Cincinati Ohio from 1856 to 1914 and in
Chicago
1865 t o 1912. He was a major supplier of wind, brass, and percussion
instruments during the US Civil War. His family became famous in 20th
Century for their line of Organs.
This trombone is in raw brass
and is equipped with string operated top action rotary
valves (TARV) typical of the Civil War period. It is somewhat uncommon
as most Civil War brass was configured as Over-The-Shoulder (OTS)
horns.
It is of a large bore (takes a tuba mouthpiece) and plays freely with a
big sound. The large pigtail loop and "S" brace make this a
particularly
beautiful horn.
