Cavalry Trombone c.1890

This is a rare cavalry trombone made late 19th century by Charles Maheu in Gand, Belgium. It is a 4-valve trombone, seemingly pitched in C with a Franco-Belgian cavalry model wrap. It is made of brass and silver plated. Inscribed on the 2nd valve casing is the maker's mark: "CH. MAHEU / BREVETE / GAND and serial number 2434" The inscription is framed top and bottom by a 6 pointed star.

The unique wrap of the cavalry trombones is due to the practical problem of riding a horse while playing.  With a horse rearing their head as they regularly do, a normal valve trombone would offer substancial risk to one's chops!!

Another example of a cavalry trombone is found in collection of Jeremy Montagu- Oxford (Historic Brass Society Journal Vol 14, 2002, p.396)
