Hall and Quinby Eb Bass Presentaion Tuba - 1872

This is a beautiful nicle Silver Eb Bass Tuba made by Hall and Quinby of Boston Massachusetts.  It was built in High Pitch (A=454) but modified at a later date to play in modern pitch.  It features American string operated rotary valves (scroll down for a close-up of valves).

It was a common practice in the 19th century for a cornet or other small instrument to be presented as a gift to a particularly good musician in recocognition of his talent or services to the town.  It is,  however, rather unique for a  tuba to be presented to someone! The inscription  reads:

Presented
-to-
James D. Judge
by his friends
Aug 15th 1872

Nothing is known at this time about Mr. James Judge, or his most kind friends, but  some research continues.  In any regard, James received a truly lovely tuba with a big and centered sound.  Restoration was done by Dick Hansen, Brimfield, MA.
