Hall
and Quinby Eb Bass Presentaion Tuba - 1872
This is a beautiful
nicle Silver Eb Bass Tuba made by Hall and Quinby of Boston
Massachusetts. It was built in High Pitch (A=454) but modified at
a later date to play in modern pitch. It features American string
operated rotary valves (scroll down for a close-up of valves).
It was a common
practice in the 19th century for a cornet or other small instrument to
be presented as a gift to a particularly good musician in recocognition
of his talent or services to the town. It is, however,
rather unique for a tuba to be presented to someone! The
inscription reads:

Nothing is known at this time about Mr. James Judge,
or his most kind friends, but some research continues. In
any regard, James received a truly lovely tuba with a big and centered
sound. Restoration was done by Dick Hansen, Brimfield, MA.James D. Judge by his friends Aug 15th 1872 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
