Hawkes & Sons Bb Bass Helicon c.1905 This massive Bb Bass Helicon
was donated tby a Thai military bandsman
to a Bangkok primary school at its grand opening in 1939.
It
was likely too big (17" Bell and 46" tall) for the normal Thai
miltary man - and certainly too big for any primary school kid, so it
languished
hanging on a wall in the school bandroom as a decoration for 60 years
turning green!.
I heard about it through my repairer- who had previously tried to buy
it
himself- but I hit the time right- when the school was trying to
reconstitute
its school band. The proceeds of the sale went to buy new
instruments
of a more appropriate size. Inscription:
Excelsior Sonorous
Class A Hawkes & Sons Denman Street London Serial 80386 The Helicon was fully
restored in 1999 and now plays well - with a big
beautiful sound!! All parts appear to be original except
the
end of the leadpipe which was modified slightly so the mouthpiece could
reach my chops! Finished in Raw Brass.<> This great
horn
has since found a new home playing in a dixieland combo
in St Petersburg Florida.
