1921 Conn New Wonder "Giant" Eb Bass
This is one of Conn's famous New Wonder "Giant" or Contra Eb tubas (model 20J) which Conn claimed "possesses the same calibre and volume of tone as the Monster Bb Bass".   It is indeed a monster with a 20 inch bell,  and 37 inches height overall and weighing 17 pounds.  It is silverplated with overall gold wash, most of which is surprizingly still intact. In their catalog, Conn provided options for finish and 4th valves. As stated in their advertisements:  "Beautifully engraved, triple silver plated over blast velvet finish, inside of bell burnished, pearl inlaid finger tips - Price $132.00; with 4 valves, $145.00".  The engraving on the bell (shown below) is  truly elegant and consistant with the professional level tubas made by Conn in the 20's.   This tuba, (no.175679)  shows almost no signs of dents or repairs and plays superbly despite its 85 years of service.

This wonderful old tuba has just begun a new lease on life with an equally wonderful old tubist named Karl Megules of Trenton, New Jersey. (see bottom pic).  Karl is principal tubist with the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra (Since 1981), and the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra (Since 1975).  He has performed with the Princeton Chamber Orchestra, the New Jersey Opera Orchestra, and has performed as soloist with many other orchestras.  He is also the tubist with the Trenton Brass Quintet (plus1).
