York Master Eb Tuba c.1964 Carl Fischer bought the
venerable York Band Instrument Company in 1941, and after the war used
the
Grand Rapids plant for making student-line instruments. However,
to keep a presence in the professional and high-end market, they began
to import a
series of tubas from Boehm and Meinl in Germany under the label 'York
Master'. The 'York Master' name was used by Fischer during the 1950's
and 1960's Boem & Meinl made an effort to build instruments
that looked like traditional American line, continuing the tradition of
the York design. York Master tubas came in all
configurations, ranging from three-valve bell front instruments to
four-valve bell up and interchangeable bell instruments.
Boehm & Meinl had over 100 people employed in Geretsried post WWII; and built just about any kinf of brass instrument, piston and rotary valves, for many companies, but they did indeed build many for what was left of the "York" brand. In 1992, Walter Nirschl bought B&M and now sells instruments at a much smaller volume under "B&M Symphonic". This instrument, while not historically significant, is still an excellent quality tuba with a sweet centered tone. It measurees 35inches tall with a 15 inch bell with silver plated tuning crooks. ![]() |
