Rare Kaiser Convertible OTS / Bell Forward Cornet c.1870

This is the ultimate in over-the-shoulder cornets - configured so that it can be quickly converted to a bell forward horn!! It weas made by Franz G Kaiser of Cincinati.  Kaiser, born in Saxony was related to Rudolph Wurlitzer. He was in business with William Kohler as Kaiser and Kohler  from 1857-1893.

While many Civil War era horns were adaped to play in an upright (bell-up) position by using bent leadpipes, this one converts to a normal appearing bell-forward cornet!  The swivel connection is midway in the bell bow and can be locked in position with a screw. The bell section is reinforced on the inside of the bow as there are no other braces.  It employs side action string operated rotary valves.  This configuration was very useful when the band was asked to play in the town bandstand!
