War Officer's Sabre 1862This sabre was presented
to Lt. Waldo Sprague in 1862 Sprague was related to
Phil Holcomb on his mother's side. The inscription reads:
Presented to
The 17th Regiment New York State Volunteer Infantry was formed
early in the war. The Blade is ornately inscribed with name Tiffany
& Co. N.Y. The sword was made by Collins & Co. Hartford
Conn. The hilt and trim are brass and the scabbard is leather. ( in
remarkably good condition!). In researching his geneology a list
of battles and movements of the 17th-and Waldo - has been found (Click here)
He was badly injured in the 2nd battle of Bull Run. He served as
Adjutant from this time onwards.
