A37
Civil War Officer's Dress Sword

This sword belonged to Capt Waldo Sprague- a distant relative of Phil Holcomb. Sprague served in the 17th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry from 1862. This sword was presented to him in 1893 by his veterans organization (Lafayette Post No 140 Grand Army of the Republic). The ornate inscription on the scabbard reads:
Presented to Capt. Waldo Sprague
71st
Regt. N.G.N.Y.
By his freinds of the71st Reg
7th
Regt Veterans and
Lafayette Post No 140 G.A.R.
1893
Half the length of the blade is ornately decorated and inscribed with  Capt. Waldo Sprague on one side and  U.S. on the other. The hand grip appears to be wood. The sword was made by Ridabock& Co. New York, N.Y. (see also Spragues sabre)
