This ferocious fellow is an 18" tall doll representing the traditional Lion character in Japanese Kabuki theater. The robes and accessories are all authentic Japanese silk brocades and the face is painted in the same manner as the real Kabuki actor's face (scroll down for a close-up).  The doll is enclosed in a wooden frame glass case which dis-assembles for moving. The doll was acquired in Tokyo in the mid 1950s.
