Bronze Female Daikin Figure c.1880This Striking Bronze
is a "dakini" from Nepal or Tibet; a Mahayana Buddhist
Tantric - an absorption
of older female Indic deities.
Her face exhibits classic Pala/Sena (12th.-14th. century in India, big influence on Burmese iconography in 14th - 17 th century) features. She sits in "lalitasana" or "the mudra of enjoyment and relaxation". The raised open palm face out usually is some form of "abhibya mudra" and the hand out-turned on her right side, resting on her leg, is some form of "varada mudra." The hand mudras in Mahayana Tantric Buddhism can have very esoteric meanings quite distinct from the Theravadan terms. This is almost certainly a good quality copy from late 19th century or so of an "original" 17th. century north-western Burman model. ![]() |
