Salt is essential to the
health of the nomadic people in the pastures of central Asia.
Salt is carried in small bags like this with an opening
just big enough for a hand to grab a pinch. The bags are hooked
onto the saddles or other trappings of camels or donkeys as the tribe
moves from one grazing area to another. These bags are always
colorful while still being utilitarian. They are sometimes made
from fragments of old worn out kelim carpets- or like this one,
made from scratch as a salt bag. Note the colorful tassels
attached for decoration. This bag is believed to be made by Turkoman
refugees in Northern Afghanistan.
