This is a rare matched pair of
antique Persian Sarab carpets c.1900 or earlier. The suberbly
crisp design features a center hexagonal medallian with a criciform
figure surrounded by thinly spaced accent lines - all on a camel main
field. Each corner features a similar cruciform medallian on a red
field. The threee main borders employ geometric designs- the outside
border being stacked diamonds as found in many Caucasians.
These carpets , being tribals, have minor design difference and some hue variation consistant with long term use. The construction of these Sarabs is unique- with double cotton weft threads- one of which is much larger (pencil size)- making the carpets extremely heavy and stiff- and certainly not foldable. These would wear like iron in a heavy traffic area! A detail photo is provided immediately under the full photo of each car[pet- scroll down to see all views.
