189-Persian Ardabil- Caucasian Design

ORIGIN:      Persian     GROUP:     Ardabil
STYLE:      Caucasian - Konakhed
 SIZE:          6'6" x 10'3"

KNOTS:        Persian  140 KPSI
MATERIALS:  Wool pile on Cotton base

ARDABIL is a town in the northwestern Iranian province of Azerbaijan, in the Caucuses region. Ardabil is the center of Persian Kazak rugs. Ardabil rugs are similar to Caucasian rugs with predominantly geometric designs but differ by having motifs woven into them and tend to be lighter in their color use. Fine wool is used with tight good textured piles.

This superb contemporary carpet (c.1980) features two Caucasian Konakhend cross motifs on a beautiful light chestnut brown field.  This cross motif hails from early traditional Christian Armenian designs. The main border is a geometric figure resembling a Caucasian Kufic style border. The figures are bordered by a fine darker  line making the design stand out sharply.
