The Kilim (or Gelim) carpet is
flat-woven- with the threads being woven
through the warp and weft. It is a form of tapestry -with the back side
looking almost the same as the front. The Soumak Kilim, however,
is different- being the work of the Circassian people who live by the
Caspian
Sea south of Daghestan. The Vernahs and Silahs are in the Soumak group,
but are Armenian or Tartar artisans. The Soumak is woven on a warp and
weft framework and is sewn flat in a type of chain-stitch and with a
needle-
while the strands of the wool follow on the reverse. Loose
threads
on the back are common to a Soumak carpet. These carpets
wear
like iron and are often placed in a high traffic area. Some of
the most beautiful and intricate designs are found in Kelims. They make
striking wall hangings in a modern home.
